Making yourself less of a target is simpler than you might think.  Remember a criminal is an opportunist. He is looking for an easy score.  If a burglar is walking down your street at night and your house is very well lit, and your neighbors’ house is not, your neighbor's house with less lighting makes it easier for the criminal to conceal himself and subsequently easier for him to break in.

Although home burglaries may seem random in occurrence, they actually involve a selection process.  The burglar's selection process is simple. Choose an unoccupied home with the easiest access, the greatest amount of cover, and with the best escape routes.
